The war to end all wars...

...ended ninety two years ago today, at eleven o'clock in the morning, local time. It was a war that never should have happened, launched by leaders who had not themselves known war, rushed into enthusiastically by millions who saw it as a grand adventure, a chance for heroism, and in which a whole generation would die. Its end would mark the triumph of nationalism and set the stage for future horrors, perhaps even some still to come.

The men and women who fight in wars deserve the praise and gratitude of their nations, but never may we imagine that war is anything but an evil, the destroyer of lives and maker of misery. Let us pray for an end to all wars and the swift return home of all who fight in them.
