It's a month after the solstice, the hottest time of the year, on average, at least hereabouts.

I had to drive back to NH today to rescue Dr. Laura Schlessinger's show on the Rhode Island station. Ugh, on at least two levels.

Frodo and Sam were lucky Gondor had no First Amendment, which would have protected Sauron's right to spew out lies and distortions to every palantir in Middle-earth, and, according to the Roberts Court's interpretation, to spend as much as he liked in support of any candidate for the Stewardship.

What good would their puny Second Amendment pop-guns have done them? Sauron would have been the darling of the racist neo-Know-Nothing "conservative" movement, much as he was in Numenor, and the whole of Gondor would have crumbled, much as America has been under the past three decades -- no, four -- of Republican dominance or influence.

I'd love to find someone out there willing to use radio to promote progressive views of history and current events. There are a growing number of stations shutting down for lack of an audience, and many of the survivors are airing lies and distortions worthy of Goebbels. But of course there's no money.
