During the course of a housecleaning this weekend I found a bunch of foreign coins. Some of them have strange inscriptions around their edges:

"PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD" on a British one-pound coin;

"DEGUS ET TUTAMEN" on another British one-pound coin;

"GOD ZIJ MET ONS" on a Dutch coin denominated "2 1/2 G".

Of course, here in the United States we have "ANNUIT COEPTIS" and "NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM" on our dollar bills, accompanied by a bizarre Masonic symbol reminiscent of the Eye of Sauron.

I know where the British coins came from. but have no idea how I came by the Dutch one; I've never been to the Netherlands.

The weird coins here were mostly either picked up randomly on the sidewalk, or received in change, including ones that are close enough to an American coin in weight and shape to fool either a vending machine or a cashier who isn't paying close attention. I suspect I'll find fewer of those in Seattle than I did in New York.
