Private varnish

Lately I've seen a fair number of private rail cars at South Station.

http://interpring.com/Pictures/110718/IMG00207-20110713-1851.jpg is a former Boston and Maine sleeper, Salisbury Beach, that ran on the State of Maine Express between Bangor and New York (via Worcester, bypassing Boston) for a few years in the 1950's.

http://interpring.com/Pictures/111007/IMG00250-20110926-1733.jpg is ex-New York Central #3, a former office car that supposedly belonged to one of the Vanderbilts. The drumhead on the rear reads "Empire State Express".

This was a special train, ordered by someone with a lot of money; as I watched, an Amtrak HHP-8 ("flying banana") electric locomotive hooked up to these two cars and pulled out with them, probably for NYC or Washington.

I didn't know L&N had a Crescent; the Southern Railway's premiere train between New York and New Orleans carried that name for decades, and Amtrak now runs a Crescent on its route.

The moneyed elite can ride the rails whenever and wherever they want, even as they lobby to shut down rail service for the rest of us. In the words of William Vanderbilt, "the public be damned".
