Arriving at WUMB at my usual early hour, I went out into the hall and walked over to the window well by the bathroom, where enough Verizon Wireless signal filters down from the world above that I can check my voice mail. As I looked out into the window well, I noticed something: a young skunk, which had fallen in during the night, looking for a way out. It was alternately trying to climb the brickwork and burrow into the concrete floor, with no hope of success.
After consulting with the announcer on duty I called Public Safety. I suggested to the fellow they sent that a sufficiently long board or screen lowered into the well should offer the creature a path to freedom without anyone needing to risk having to spend the day in a bathtub full of tomato juice.
But twenty minutes later, when he came back with Animal Rescue in tow, the skunk was gone. Could it climb the brickwork after all? Did one of the construction workers outside liberate it?
