Shocking disregard for facts
Sep. 27th, 2011 08:01 pmI am used to hearing the usual right-wing bullshit from talk radio. While I violently disagree with the likes of Mike Huckabee and Dennis Miller on most issues, what they say usually makes some sense, at least from the simplistic perspective of the teahadist.
This morning, however, Harley Carnes of CBS News said a number of things that are blatantly untrue. According to him, Jews have lived in Israel for thousands of years, while Palestinians are intruders from Jordan or Syria with designs on Jewish land. Moreover, the West Bank is the only militarily defensible part of Israel, and giving it to Palestinians would leave a nonviable Israel that would quickly fall to the barbarian hordes that surround it on every side but the sea.
Does Carnes not understand that a hundred years ago there were almost no Jews in what is now Israel? Does he not understand that a European army conquered the country in 1917, much as another such had done eight centuries before, turning the country into a European colony and ultimately displacing hundreds of thousands whose ancestors had held the land since time immemorial? Does he not see the parallel between the modern state of Israel and the medieval Kingdom of Jerusalem, each propped up by massive military aid from abroad? Does he not remember the millions of foreign colonists, by no means all Jewish, who settled in the land in the decades since 1917, or the millions of Palestinian exiles around the world pining for lost homes?
As for Israel's supposed military weakness, has Carnes forgotten the Six-day War of 1967 or the Israeli nuclear arsenal?
There is always more than one side to any dispute, especially one as complicated as that between Israelis and Palestinians. This man is a moron, or a liar. And shame on CBS for letting him stamp its company name on his bullshit.
