It is a vivid and powerful portrayal of the struggle of the people of Algiers for independence from France. Although the movie was filmed 45 years ago, the images seem all too current; the fighters in the streets could as easily be Libyan rebels or Afghan insurgents, and the soldiers and police Egyptian -- or American.
