Report from New Hampshire
Oct. 5th, 2010 10:11 pmIt's getting ugly out there.
My NH client is running a massive amount of political ads, pretty much all of them in support of Republican candidates. What's interesting is that most of them are not traditional "I'm John McCain and I approve this message" campaign ads; they're paid for by third parties with names like "Americans for Tax Freedom", and they carry disclaimers to the effect that they are not on behalf of, or approved by, any candidate.
From my client's point of view these ads are a gold mine; because the advertiser isn't a candidate's campaign committee, the ads aren't subject to the lowest unit rate rule, and the station can charge whatever it wants. But these sorts of ads aren't good for the political process; they're the result of the recent Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited corporate campaign spending, and somebody with a lot of money wants New Hampshire to go Republican. I'll bet this is happening all over the country.
When I went out to take monitor point readings for the AM station, I found about two dozen wild turkeys foraging in a field near one of the monitor points.
